Nacho Picasso is the Organic Choice for #1 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 18, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

Nacho PicassoCompared to everyone else, 2013 thus far has been a clear battle for #1 Freshest in the Northwest between Sam Lachow and Nacho Picasso. After a long debate it was the question of who hit harder in the Northwest and Nacho was named this year’s #1. Sam Lachow has been on national tours, released an EP called 5 Good Reasons with Raz Simone, and plans a new EP later this July. On the other hand, Nacho Picasso has done more local shows and an EP called Vampsterdam with last year’s #7 Avatar Darko. Clearly, the two are just as big as each other but for completely different reasons. When D-Money introduced both artists at the same time the panel was instantly split, so he made them review the criteria to make the right choice.

    Sam Lachow

The criteria for Freshest in the Northwest are impact, lyrics, buzz, and style in the last 6-8 months. With impact the panel was still split with Q mentioning that Nacho is “here” more and Sermon adding “and when he’s here you know he’s here.” Then, Swervewon countered that Sam has that Mac Miller quality that when he shows up in the park 20 people instantly gather. Nacho got the push when it came to lyrics based on his originality in his bars while M-Pyre applauded Sam’s melodies, cadences, producing, and camera skills while explaining that lyrics may not be his strong suit. Nacho Picasso is a rapper’s rapper while Sam Lachow is a better artist. The comparisons continued when this year’s #0 artist Macklemore came up yet again. Before taking over the industry, Mack toured all the time and was applauded as an excellent songwriter much like the very same qualities the panel said they loved about Sam Lachow. With label’s looking his or this year’s #6 Sol’s way as a possible “next Macklemore” it appears the national media will favor Sam Lachow. When talking about buzz, Mac Smiff brought out that Nacho Picasso hits only in the Northwest while Sam Lachow holds more national appeal.

Q Dot summed up the whole debate between Nacho and Sam that it’s all apples and oranges and that their both fruit and eating off it. Following it up, Luvva J asked “Which fruit is more organic?” The question instantly swayed everyone on the panel because even though Sam’s buzz hits nationally more, Nacho Picasso is a pure Northwest product. D-Money asked for a final vote and it was unanimous that 2013’s Freshest in the Northwest title goes to Nacho Picasso! Do you agree with the decision on Nacho Picasso for #1? Sound off and debate it on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #FreshestintheNW.

Cassow Mania Explodes at #3 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 17, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

    Cassow

With an almost cult like following, Cassow is starting to become unavoidable, and this year the Portland artist finds himself in the Top 5 Freshest in the Northwest at #3. Earlier this year, his critically acclaimed mixtape, Cold Winter, produced features from Danny Brown and Smoke DZA and production from Hippie Sabotage, Reignstate, and in-house producer Trox. A steady stream of videos has followed and his ability to draw crowds in Portland is a strong reflection of our #5 Tacoma artist Clemm Rishad. Cassow (Caz-So), despite D-Money’s inability to say his name correctly, is a name that consistently changes the fortunes of a show as Mac Smiff said there may be 10 people there and then Cassow shows up with 40 cars later and the place is packed.

The rapper’s reach goes far beyond the Northwest as just like fellow PDX rapper Luck-One he sees coverage in all the major blocks and has even seen looks from XXL. The result is that Cassow comes in a solid #3 for this year and may very well challenge for #1 next year. Speaking of tomorrow, we’re going to drop #1 & #2 both on you at the same damn time! Tomorrow, its time to wrap up this list with the two artists that dominated all of the panel’s lists and your fan votes, when we will decide who will be 2013′s #1 and #2 artists! Sound off who you think is the #1 Freshest in the Northwest on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #FreshestintheNW. Yeah go ahead and do that!

Luck-One the King is #4 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 16, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

Luck-OneWith the audacity to call himself the King of the Northwest, a rapper better be a mean lyricist on the mic. Luck-One enters this year’s Freshest in the Northwest list at #4 with an impassioned declaration from Mac Smiff that he may just be the best rapper on the whole west coast outside of Kendrick Lamar. Following a theme of some of the artists that have landed on the list thus far such as Sol, J. Pinder, and Neema, the NE Portland artist had very little music to consider in the past 6-8 months, but still his impact can be described as unheard of.

After winding down the buzz over his last collaboration EP with singer Dizz called Critical Mass, a quiet period was had from Luck before he hit the net and the streets with “Strange Fruit.” It was the first thing to be heard from Luck for months outside of a rare MTV RapFix interview and it resonated with all the major blogs, radio stations, and the social networks. Luck is back and is working on his next project which will follow up the bold title from last year and will be called King of the Northwest II: The Curse of the Pharaoh. Mystery always seems to surround Luck-One and its probably why he’s always been an industry favorite and this year he’s a sold addition to our top 5! Should Clemm Rishad have passed Luck-One for #4 because of the lack of activity or are you happy with their rankings? Who is your top 3? Clemm Rishad Reps Tacoma as #5 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 15, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

Clemm RishadCompared to Seattle, Tacoma has always struggled to support its local music or an active nightlife making it harder for an emcee to make big moves. Despite that, over the past couple of years, Clemm Rishad has made some of the biggest moves out of all of the Northwest earing him a very strong placement on the Freshest in the Northwest list at #5. The rapper has also been just as successful at home as well as abroad in showing that he can consistently sell out Tacoma venue, Jazzbones, which normally caters to rock music. His national buzz has been exploding as of recent due to the doors that were opened after he found a writing credit with his partner William Jordan as part of the Writer’s Block, on Nicki Minaj’s “Fly.”

This year, Clemm got the exclusive DJ Skee hosting look much like J. Pinder on his latest mixtape, Supaflyness, which has led to a national tour and the growing of respect for his lyrical prowess everywhere. Even, a veteran and respected lyricist like Kurupt, who was featured on Clemm’s mixtape has endorsed the rapper and shown his support by staying at a recent Jazzbones show after opening for him. As Swervewon explained, while he may not be as hip to his body of work, he knows who he is, which says a lot. The unanimous appeal for a rapper that has been overdue this type of recognition stopped Sol’s accent up the list to keep him at #6. Did Clemm Rishad make your top 5? J. Pinder’s Industry Connects Knot Him #7 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 12, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

    J. PinderJ. Pinder returns to the Freshest in the Northwest list, falling to the other half of the top 5, and still making the list initially at #6 based on the buzz building around his music industry connections. Last year, timing was Pinder’s best friend when he actually battled Macklemore for the #1 spot, falling just a hair short after being fresh off the release of his debut album Careless and national tours with Talib Kweli and Black Milk. He followed the album with a remixed version mixed by DJ Skee called the Careless Redux released late last year. Since then, Pinder has stepped out of the spotlight and has been in the studio. While as M-Pyre shared, a rapper’s studio time may be as interesting to the public as watching paint dry, Pinder has done a magnificent job of teasing meetings and sessions with some very big names such as Musiq Soulchild, Kendrick Lamar, Tha Bizne$$, and trips to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment offices from many trips to Los Angeles. Whenever he does leak something sampled or not it’s covered everywhere and he almost followed in Macklemore’s footsteps of being named by XXL as a Freshman earlier this year.

However, another artist, Sol, who is also off-cycle right now because of a recent nine month worldwide vacation, quickly conflicted the panel. While not being as obvious of a choice as moving Sol past Xperience there appeared to be reason to move him past Pinder as well and to take his spot at #6. The two rappers returned to the Freshest in the Northwest list from last year and have used instagram to keep their fans watching for them. Pinder shared photos with some very big industry connects while Sol shared photos of international locale. Everyone on the panel admitted following Sol’s instagram more closely and despite Sermon’s push to keep Pinder at #6, the panel convincingly voted Sol past him in a 5-1 vote. At this point Sol has convincingly passed up two rappers to jump from #8 to #6 and now sets his sights on the Top 5. Will Sol grab a Top 5 slot and what names will he run into when he gets there? Xperience’s Grind Pays Off as #8 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 11, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

XperienceFor most artists, the pieces never seem to come together despite their strong consistent work ethic. In 2013, the veteran Xperience finally was paid dues opening on Macklemore’s sold out world tour and then saw the rise of the veteran rap supergroup TH3RDZ, with JFK and Candit. The Olympia based rapper has had a long career in this game and the panel acknowledged how hard he has always worked for his music to be heard. In addition to the tour and TH3RDZ, the vet released the Danger on the Road EP which Q Dot admitted was a personal favorite of his.

Despite Xperience’s moves and activity over the past 6-8 months, the panel was instantly conflicted about his placement over Sol. As stated previously, Sol managed to do what few artists will ever do and that’s take a complete break from music for nine months, and yet almost triple your audience. In the end, it came down to being known outside of the town and while Q Dot and Luvva J campaigned for the veteran, they could not argue that more areas of the Northwest are familiar with Sol. Thus, the panel voted and in a 4-2 vote Sol leapfrogs Xperience for #7, dropping XP to #8, and sets his eyes on the #6 slot! Do you agree that Sol’s inactivity trumps Xperience’s street grind? Sol Returns From Trip as #6 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 10, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

SolDespite having just arrived back from a multiple country vacation around the world for the past nine months, Sol returned to Seattle and the Freshest in the Northwest list. His initial announcement at #8 shocked everyone on the panel and for completely different reasons as evidenced when Swervewon called for him to be higher and Q Dot repeated the statement in complete disbelief. While on vacation, Sol constantly shared pictures of his travels on instagram and despite having only released a loose single or two is now captivating his fans several times more now than he did last year when he was named #6. As M-Pyre pointed out, Macklemore’s rise to platinum status certainly has affected Sol’s buzz positively, but even Sol’s homecoming back to Seattle was an event when last year’s #5 artist Grynch picked him up at the airport a month ago.

Swerve also pointed out that Sol had sold out a show in New York recently after the trip and it’s clear that while the panel had just criticized #10 artist Neema for a lack of music, this is a vote based off of the very same high expectations that were had for Macklemore last year. As the discussion continued it was soon unanimous that everyone defended Sol’s spot on this year’s list and he later leapfrogged Xperience to take the #7 slot and J. Pinder to take the #6 making his journey back to where he was last year! Do you agree with Sol’s placement on the list or should a more musically active Thaddeus David have at least been considered? Neema Represents Again as #10 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 8, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

NeemaLast year’s #10, Neema, once again found a place on the Freshest in the Northwest list despite a lack of a project and very little new material musically. Instead, he’s like Mac Smiff dubbed him as the “Dr. Dre of the Northwest,” meaning many of the artists enjoying success right now owe their recognition to Neema getting them there. Non-musically, Neema has constantly been putting on successful events and hosting while continuing what Q Dot recognized as, “one of the craziest grinds that I have ever seen.” Still, the lack of a project as his often delayed “The Cigar Room” continues to sit like “Detox,” troubled many members of the panel when Neema originally landed in the 9th slot citing that possibly Raz Simone or Illmaculte, who both just missed the list, deserved his spot instead. Say what you want about Neema, but with an undeniable public presence that even gets him on the evening news he is still constantly fresh on everyone’s mind.

Never the less, when given the chance to vote the more musically active Thaddeus David up to the #9 slot, the panel voted unanimously dropping Neema exactly to where he landed last year and Thaddeus up to #9. Did Neema deserve a spot on this year’s list and will Thaddeus continue his climb up the list to pass #8? Join in the conversation on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #FreshestintheNW

Thaddeus David Breaks Through to be #9 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 8, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

Thaddeus DavidThaddeus David instantly was initially approved by the panel after he was named number 10 Freshest in the Northwest to open the list with a declaration that 5 Moor Gang artists would soon follow by Q Dot and would later climb to #9 passing Neema. Thaddeus has owned the stage getting active draws at his shows opening for some big names this year plus the release of the Trapitol Trill EP and a couple loose singles with a solid video game. There may have been universal love for Thaddeus, but things got difficult quickly when it was announced that Thaddeus beat two artists by only two tenths of a point who were Raz Simone and the PDX veteran Illmaculate.

The young gunner Raz Simone is hot off a fresh year having released a solid solo EP and an EP with Sam Lachow which preceded a national tour. On the other hand, Illmaculate continues to uphold his battle rapping roots having just came back from his second Europe tour and released the Chron: Legacy EP. Based on the criteria of the past 6-8 months and a passionate speech delivered by Luvva J about paying respects to the battle MC, when D-Money proposed a vote the panel decided to keep Illmaculate alive over Raz 5-1 and to hold the fresh spitting talent for a future list. It quickly became apparent that it was a very close battle now between Thaddeus and Illmaculate as the panel was split if they should honor hip hops roots of battle rapping or expectations and commercial success. In the end, the vote was split 3-3 and it was the fans that spoke giving Thaddeus David the #10 spot! Afterwards, Thaddeus was voted past Neema unanimously to move up to the #9 slot!
